Outline

School Business Professionals (SBPs) play a vital role in schools, managing financial, site, and support services while providing essential assistance to leadership teams in implementing business decisions. They work across various school phases and structures, reporting to figures such as the headteacher or School Business Director. Their responsibilities typically include drafting and monitoring budgets, managing payroll and financial reporting, overseeing site management to ensure a safe learning environment, and handling procurement and contract management. SBPs may also identify income generation opportunities, lead marketing activities, manage administrative systems, and oversee HR processes. Ensuring compliance with safeguarding and Health & Safety policies is also a key part of their role, requiring regular interaction with stakeholders and a strong understanding of both educational and business management practices.

Working within the constraints of public funding, SBPs ensure resources are used effectively to support student achievement and promote social mobility. They play a crucial role in school governance and compliance, requiring a solid grasp of educational policies and the ability to implement change. Their work directly impacts the efficiency and sustainability of school operations. The role is known by various titles, including School Business Manager, HR Manager, Finance Manager, Office Manager, School Administrator, Business Support Officer, and Bursar, reflecting the broad scope of their responsibilities.
